Thorb® 405

Overview:

Thorb® 405 is a hydroxyphenyl triazine (HPT) UV absorber designed for high performance coatings. The low volatility, high thermal stability and extended UV absorption of Thorb® 405 provides superior protection to coatings and light sensitive substances which are subjected to extreme processing conditions and light exposure. Thorb® 405 has been developed as an interaction_free UVabsorber to be used in amine and/or metal_catalyzed coating systems or in coatings applied on base-coats or  substrates containing such catalysts.

Application:
Thorb® 405 is an HPT UV absorber recommended for use in coatings based on   catalyzed acrylic or polyester resins. lts low melting temperature makes it an ideal product for glycidyl methylacrylate (GMA) type powder coatings.

Typical application areas include:

   • Automotive clear coats.

   • Automotive powder clear coats.

   • Powder coatings for plastics and wood

   • High performance industrial coatings

Further, the strong blue-shifted absorption properties of Thorb® 405 makes it an attractive selection for the stabilization of high performance UV-cured systems. In such systems, photoinitiators absorbing at or above 400 nm lead to excellent through cure.

Thorb® 405 may be used in combination with other UV absorbers e.g. hydroxyphenylbenzotriazole types such as UV-1130, UV-384 or UV-928, to   broaden the UV protection range for materials that are sensitive to visible     light such as wood. lt is recommended to use Thorb® 405 in combination with a light stabilizer of the sterically hindered amine class(HALS) such as LS-144,UV-152,UV-292 or UV-123.These combinations provide synergistic protection effects against gloss reduction, cracking, blistering, de lamination and color change. The light stabilizers may be added in clear coats, base coats or solid shades. The optimum price/performance levels should be   determined by experimental trials series covering a concentration range.
