Very Low Volatile Hydroxyphenyl Triazine UV Absorber

Characterization
Thorb® 1600 is a hydroxyphenyl triazine ultraviolet absorber designed for demanding polymer applications where very low volatility, high UV screening efficiency and good compatibility are required. It helps improve outdoor durability in engineering plastics and selected high-performance polymer systems.

Applications
Typical application areas include polyalkylene terephthalates and naphthalates, linear and branched polycarbonates, acrylics such as PMMA and their copolymers, modified polyphenylene ether compounds, polyamides, SAN, ASA, polyolefins and other high-performance plastics.
Thorb® 1600 is suitable for polymer blends and alloys including PC/ABS, PC/PBT, PPE/PS and PPE/PA, as well as transparent, translucent or pigmented reinforced, filled and/or flame-retarded compounds.


Features / Benefits
Thorb® 1600 combines strong UV absorbance in the near-UVA range with low volatility and high thermal stability. It is suitable for processes and end-use conditions that require high loading levels, excellent compatibility and long-term durability.
The product is particularly useful for thin layers and films, cap-layer compounds, sheets, fibers, co-extruded or co-injected semi-finished parts and complex moldings. Its strong UV screening activity can support lower use levels compared with many conventional UV absorbers while maintaining effective protection.

Guidelines for Use
Recommended use levels are typically 0.2–6 % by weight, depending on polymer type, article thickness, processing conditions and performance target. Thorb® 1600 can be incorporated by conventional powder, solution or melt blending methods and may be used alone or together with antioxidants, phosphites, hindered amine light stabilizers and other functional additives.

Thorb® 1600 exhibits strong absorbance in the 300–400 nm region and minimal absorbance in the visible region (>400 nm). The absorption maximum is at 302 nm (ε = 7.1 × 10⁴ l/mol·cm) in chloroform solution.
